By the time Leigh got to the station an hour later, she couldn’t stop going over the conversation with Jake in her head. Because the truth was, there was something not right about the whole investigation into Glenda Alexander’s murder, and now it was niggling her like an itch that she couldn’t quite scratch. Danny Alexander was not a stupid man. Before he got into bed with the Carters, he and his partner, Luke Sullivan, had built up a multi-million-pound business. Whilst she didn’t know whether or not he was capable of doing what he’d been accused of, she did wonder why he would leave a murder weapon covered in his DNA and fingerprints at the crime scene. Even if he had acted in a fit of rage and blind panic afterwards, he’d had days to cover up what he’d done before Glenda’s body was discovered.

The other strange element to this case was that the murder weapon was a leg from a wooden table of some sort. A short one, like a coffee or a side table, yet it matched no piece of furniture in Glenda’s flat. So, the killer either brought it with them or Glenda had a single coffee table leg hanging around which the killer picked up at random. Neither of those solutions made any sense to Leigh. If the killer brought the weapon, then they chose it purposely, and why would anyone choose to kill someone with a table leg? Why not opt for something more effective? And if the killer didn’t bring it, why the hell would Glenda have a random table leg in her flat?

Leigh turned on her computer and pulled up the file that the DI in the Major Incidents Team had sent her. The photographs of Glenda’s injuries were horrific but there was one she was particularly interested in. A photograph of Glenda’s temple. Her face was barely recognisable, but there, just above her eye, was a mark that looked distinctly like the partial imprint of a ring. As far as Leigh was aware, no such ring had been found at Danny’s house, or Jake’s apartment, and she was sure she hadn’t seen him wearing any jewellery on the one occasion she had met him before. Of course, alone, it meant nothing. But, along with that niggling feeling that just wouldn’t go away, it was enough to make Leigh wonder if Danny Alexander was responsible for the crimes he’d been locked up for.
